Google is making a major push with display advertising

Google has been flying under the radar with its plans to aggressively compete in the display advertising business. However, with the release of a YouTube video entitled, "Watch This Space" (advertising its vision for display ads), it is sounding off to advertisers and competitors alike, that it is ready to compete with powerhouses like Facebook and Apple.

Eric Schmidt calls display advertising as the "next frontier". Google lorded over Yahoo! and Microsoft in the web search industry; controlling 70% of it. But its search advertising platform has always been in question. The success of Facebook's display advertising model and Steve Jobs vision of Apple iAds has not escaped Google's attention.

Google essentially has the tools (much more than the competion) to dominate the display advertising business. It has place Google Android in the right spot to dominate the smartphone, mobile computing market in a couple of years. It has already launched an Adwords model in Google Mobile Ads. It will launch Google TV this fall.

It is trying to strengthen YouTube since it entered into the video rental industry. Los Angeles Times reports that YouTube hired Robert Kyncl (a former Netflix executive) to strengthen its relationships with the entertainment industry. In addition, it has named Dean Gilbert (VP for product management - Google TV) to be the global head for content. YouTube's homespace has also been reportedly sold out with big advertisers opting for display adverts this August and September.
